Munitorum Field Manual - Tyranid Point Costs

Even with everything going on, I need to take a look at what my Tyranids will cost!  This will also help a bit as I dive more into my faction.  I've still got so much to get into, but I just have to take a break for this.

Though right off the bat, we got a few spoilers on this.  40K points are now using AoS rules where you always buy a fixed number of models for a set cost.  Additionally, it doesn't look like we have to pay for Wargear anymore.  I think many players will miss the granularity.  I know I'm going to miss it a little bit, even though this might result in fairer points costs for many units.  That all said, let's take a look.

Right off the bat, it looks like below strength units is gone as a rule.  You can include any number of models you want in a unit, as long as it's below the maximum for the point cost.  You still pay as if you bought the maximum though.  Still, I can see some players doing this to load models into Transports.

Barbgaunts - 10 pts a model

Sounds about right, at least as a gut response.

Biovores - 40 pts a model

Wow, I'm a little surprised here.  There's no rules about paying for reinforcements, so unless spore mines are dirt cheap, this is a bargain.

Broodlord - 100 pts

Eh, not too bad I think.  I feel he should be a bit cheaper based on what he does.  But DEVASTATING WOUNDS are going to be a thing.

Carnifexes - 125 pts a model

I feel this should be lower.  I know our wargear is free, but it's an 8 Wound model hitting on 4s.  Maybe if we give them all the guns . . .

Deathleaper - 80 pts

Seems about right, I think.  Maybe a little pricy but lets see what else we have.

Exocrine - 135 pts

See, this seems better to me.

Gargoyles - 75 pts per 10 models

There we go!  This is why this can be a nice way to do points.  I'll happily pay this for Gargoyles.

Genestealers - 18 pts a model

Yeah, I think this works.  Especially at 2 Wounds a piece I think we can bring our Genestealers back.

Harpy - 170 pts

This is another one that feels like a steal.  Granted, that's probably anchored off of 9th Edition.  But it's an aircraft that can give us more spore mines.

Haruspex - 125 pts

Yeah, Carnifexes feel really over costed now.

Hive Crone - 200 pts

Considering this can be used as an anti-vehicle piece, I think this makes sense.  I don't think it's as good as Harpy's are, but I think this is useable.

Hive Guard - 100 pts per 3 models

Oh yeah!  I'll pay that for Hive Guard!

Hive Tyrant - 220 pts per model

That feels like a lot.  I'm worried our Synapse is going to come at a premium now.  Let's see what Tyrant Guard cost . . .

Hormagaunts - 7 pts per model

Oh hell yes!  I feel like broods are back!  Maybe because there's a decent amount of anti-infantry threat out there all of our infantry will be affordable now.

Lictor - 75 pts

Eh . . . that feels a bit much too.  Unless Characters are real value pieces, this is going to be hard to get a lot of value back.

Maleceptor - 165 pts

Yeah, that Hive Tyrant is feeling over costed.

Mawloc - 145 pts

Yeah, I think the Deep Strike and mortal wounds might be worth that.  Hard to tell though.

Mucolid Spores - 45 pts per model

45 pts!  Are you high?  Well this is one they definitely don't want us taking, but only spawning with Sporocysts.

Neurogaunts - 45 pts for 11 models

These are good!  That's less that 5 points a model!  Hell, that's less than 4.5 points a model!  These will be useable.

Neurotyrant - 105 pts.

I feel like the only reason he costs the extra 5 is to bring the unit with Neurogaunts to 150 pts.  Either way, I think this will work.

Old One Eye - 140 pts

If you're going to take Carnifexes, you're taking Old One Eye.  And it's okay at this cost, I think.

Parasite of Mortrex - 90 pts

Not sure about this one.  It is fast and can harass stuff, but I think you're paying for those potential rippers.

Psychophage - 125 pts

I think the Aura makes them okay at this cost.

Pyrovores - 30 pts per model

Yeah, I think these are still good.

Raveners - 25 pts per model

Oh yeah!  I'll take Raveners at that cost!

Ripper Swarms - 15 pts per model

Now that a lot of the weird stuff is gone from them, and they can harass OC 2 units, I think these might be okay.

Screamer-killer - 180 pts per model

Again, I'm really not sure about this.  It gets a lot of attacks, and inflicting potential Battle-shock is nice.  But that's a lot for a 9 wound model.

Spore Mines - 50 pts for 3 models

This really makes Biovores good.  If we have to buy spore mines, they'll be trash again.

Sporocyst - 145 pts

The board control is really nice, but it's OC 0 and can't move.  Not sure on this one either.

Termagants - 6 pts per model

Yep!  Gaunt carpets are back!  Whoot!

Tervigon - 200 pts

This is tough, but I think the combo with Termagants is worth it.

The Swarmlord - 250 pts

Will I pay 30 pts for free CP generation and the ability to Vect a strat?  Yeah, probably.

Toxicrene - 200 pts

No.  Sorry, just no.

Trygon - 180 pts

Wow!  That's quite the jump from the Mawloc for that 3" Deep Strike.  Is it worth it?  Guess we'll have to find out.

Tyranid Warriors with Melee Bio-weapons - 30 pts per model

They lost some of their previous oomph.  Honestly I think this is hard to justify when Raveners are 25 pts.

Tyranid Warriors with Ranged Bio-weapons - 70 pts for 3 models

What!  How?  These are cheaper than Raveners!  Why do warriors go down in cost when you give them guns?

Tyrannocyte - 105 pts

Oh yeah!  I'll pay that for a drop pod that's also a 10 wound model!

Tyrannofex - 200 pts

In addition to being some of our only ant-tank, I think the Tyrannofex is genuinely good.  I'll pay this.

Tyrant Guard - 90 pts for 3 models

This is pretty good, I think.  This will eat some of the cost on our Hive Tyrants, and potentially makes this a pick for a Neurotyrant too.

Venomthropes - 70 pts for 3 models

Yep!  I'll pay that!  No problems there!

Von Ryan's Leapers - 25 pts per model

Same cost as Raveners, and with Fights First and Infiltrate I'll pay that.

Winged Hive Tyrant - 195 pts per model

Yep!  We're paying for some of our Bodyguard unit!  That's the only explanation why this one is cheaper.

Winged Tyranid Prime - 80 pts

Yeah, I don't think it's worth that.

Zoanthropes - 30 pts per model

We're back to Zoeys costing 30 points!  Their buff is not longer as good, but that's still very nice.

Adaptive Biology - 25 pts

Would I pay 25 pts for a 5+ FNP that can go to a 4+?  If it's a high wound count model like a Tervigon, definitely.  That's essential 5 points a wound.  And if you can get the 4+ to go off . . .

Alien Cunning - 30 pts

That's a lot, but redeploys are very nice.  And remember you can get free Strategic Reserves.

Perfectly Adapted - 15 pts

Yeah, I think I'd pay 15 pts for a free re-roll each turn.  At least providing out characters can survive.

Synaptic Linchpin - 10 pts

It's definitely affordable.  If this does work with the Parasite of Mortrex, it's definitely good at that point.

FINAL THOUGHTS

I'm not done doing my deep dive yet.  I've basically been working on it an hour or so each night, so it's taking a bit.  But now I'll add this information to it.  My gut reaction is that there's some good news here.  Our infantry is probably more affordable than it's ever been.  But we're paying quite the cost for high Toughness synapse.  Still, after we've payed for our monsters, we'll be able to fit a lot of Army into the remaining slots.  There are some definite headscratchers though.  But I think I'm starting to figure out some of the trends.  But if there isn't a trend of high Toughness models being pricey or Leaders being a premium, I'm not sure what's going on.  Let's see what the rest of the armies look like.

Warhammer Day 2023

EDIT:  This is almost a full week late!  This week has sucked for many reasons, but I still can't believe it took me that long to get on...
