Let's Talk About Leaks

Leaks have to be frustrating for any company.  Marketing works.  And to make matters worse, the first people the marketing departments apply their craft to are their bosses.  That's how we keep seeing these massive marketing budgets where a company spends as much, if not more money, marketing a product as they do making it.  Then a leak happens, and that expensive marketing plan has to be changed.

But a company can plan for leaks.  And this has to have been one of those situations where GW suspected, or just downright knew, that a leak was going to happen.  That book has been in a lot of hands, and honestly I'm surprised it took this long.

Normally, I'm not the biggest fan of leaks, even though I do occasionally check them out.  Especially in gaming, a leak always makes me cringe a little.  Often times in GWs past, leaks have been playtest copies of rules.  That likely means that GW has to halt playtesting and do something about it.  And while we get some enjoyment as we pick through the leak and build our hype further, the game gets less playtesting and suffers for it.

But that's not what's happened here.  This book is written and printed.  The game is made, and GW is currently in the midst of their big marketing push to get us as excited as possible.  My bet is that GW is going to perform their due diligence in investigating this and nothing more.

But all of this is just musings.  The real question here is will this be one of the times I read a leak.

PROS

  • I'll be on the same page as everyone else.
  • I'll be able to consume content without getting spoiled.
  • I'll understand how revealed rules will interact.
  • I'll have content lined up for the weekends.

CONS

  • I might be spoiled for official reveals.
  • I'll have to dedicate more time to this project.
  • There is a small, but non-zero chance GW will interfere with the blog.

At the end of the day though, this is supposed to be fun.  It's supposed to be fun for me to put my thoughts out there like this, and hopefully fun for someone to read.  So honestly the there's really only one question.

Will the leaks make this less fun?

Will I have more fun waiting to see what the next reveal is, then writing truly blind about it, or will I have more fun sifting through the leaks and writing about them?

I'm probably not gonna make my decision today.  I'll leave this my post and continue to mull it over.

I should also note that if I choose to wait, I probably won't have to wait long.  Many people are expecting 10th Edition to drop for preorders around the Kansas City Open.  I'll likely have these rules in my hands soon.

Warhammer Day 2023

EDIT:  This is almost a full week late!  This week has sucked for many reasons, but I still can't believe it took me that long to get on...
